2. Meadows Armor
Rag Armor (2 armor): Starter gear. Replace ASAP with Leather.
Leather Armor (7 armor): First real set. 6 Deer Hide per piece at Workbench Level 2. Adequate for Eikthyr. No movement penalty — good for learning boss mechanics.
3. Black Forest Armor
Troll Armor (19 armor, +15 Sneak): The community favorite for early game. No movement penalty, +15 Sneak for bypassing enemies, and strong enough for the Swamp with good food. Many players skip Bronze entirely and go Troll → Iron.
Bronze Armor (24 armor, -10% speed): First heavy set. Better raw defense than Troll but the movement penalty hurts. Worth it if you're struggling in the Swamp.
Bear Armor (21 armor, Berserk): Glass cannon light armor. +30% health regen, +15% stamina regen, +10% damage — but +25% weakness to physical damage. High risk, high reward.
4. Swamp Armor
Root Armor (24 armor): Hybrid set. Mask = 50% poison resist (huge for Swamp). Harnesk = 50% pierce resist (great vs Deathsquitos later). Full set = +15 Bows. But: 1.5x Fire weakness — switch out before Mountains or vs Surtlings. Recommended mix: Root Harnesk + Iron Helmet/Greaves for pierce resist without fire weakness.
Iron Armor (42 armor, -10% speed): Heavy Swamp-tier tank. Massive defense upgrade from Bronze/Troll. Required 20 Iron per piece — prioritize the Mace first, then armor.
5. Mountain Armor
Fenris Armor (30 armor, +9% speed): The SPEED set. Only armor that increases movement speed (+3% per piece). Frost resist + Fire resist makes it viable in both Mountains and Plains. +15 Fists for unarmed builds. Light and fast — ideal for agile players.
Wolf Armor (61 armor, -10% speed): Heavy Mountain-tier. Chest and cape provide Frost Resist — no more mead needed. 20 Silver + Wolf Pelts per piece. Solid defense for Moder and early Plains.
6. Plains Armor
Padded Armor (79 armor, -10% speed): The pre-Mistlands standard. Lighter than Wolf (27 vs 37 weight) but significantly stronger. Requires Iron + Linen Thread (from Flax at the Spinning Wheel — need Moder dead first).
Vilebone Armor (48 armor): Endgame glass cannon. +20% blunt/pierce damage, +40% stamina regen — but +25% physical weakness. Players who never get hit love this.
7. Mistlands Armor
Eitr-Weave Armor (49 armor): The MAGE set. +100% total Eitr regeneration across all 3 pieces. Feather Cape provides frost resist + negates all fall damage (game-changer). Craft at Galdr Table with Refined Eitr, Scale Hide, Linen Thread.
Carapace Armor (96 armor, -10% speed): Pure tank. 32 armor per piece — huge defense jump from Padded. Craft at Black Forge with Carapace + Scale Hide. Best physical defense before Ashlands.
8. Ashlands Armor
Ask Armor (84 armor): Stamina-focused medium set. Reduced stamina consumption for running, jumping, and attacking. Asksvin Cloak adds Wind Run effect + -15% dodge stamina. Superior mobility for Ashlands terrain.
Embla Armor (57 armor): Ultimate mage set. +130% Eitr Regen — the highest magic sustain in Valheim. Essential for pure magic builds in Ashlands and beyond.
Flametal Armor (114 armor, -10% speed): THE tank set. 38 armor per piece — highest in the game. +20% Heat Resistance (critical in Ashlands lava zones). Required to survive Fader comfortably.
9. Best Armor Combos by Playstyle
| Playstyle | Best Sets | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Tank | Carapace → Flametal | Maximum defense. Minimal dodging needed. |
| Mage / Magic | Eitr-Weave → Embla | Maximum Eitr regen for magic spam. |
| Stealth / Archer | Troll → Root (or mix) → Ask | Sneak bonus, bow bonus, pierce resist against ranged enemies. |
| Speed / Mobility | Fenris → Ask | Move speed bonus and stamina reduction. Never get hit. |
| Hybrid (Balanced) | Root Harnesk + Iron Greaves/Helmet | Pierce resist + solid defense without fire weakness. |
10. Upgrade Scaling
All armor pieces (except Rag) gain +2 armor per upgrade level, up to Level 4 (max +6 armor from base). Capes gain +1 armor per upgrade (Ashen Cape: +2).
Example: Flametal Breastplate at base = 38 armor → Level 4 = 44 armor. Full Flametal set at Level 4 = ~132 total armor (without cape).
