Fader Boss Guide — The Final Forsaken of Ashlands
Fader is the seventh Forsaken boss, the final challenge of the Ashlands biome and the culmination of the Valheim boss progression (before Deep North). A skeletal warlord cloaked in flame, Fader combines massive melee damage with fire-based AoE attacks in a lava-filled arena. This guide covers summoning, weaknesses, best Flametal weapons, the unique Charred Fortress mechanics, and his Forsaken Power.
1. How to Summon Fader
Location
Fader's altar is deep in the Ashlands, a volcanic wasteland at the southern edge of the map. The altar is surrounded by lava flows and Charred enemy patrols. You'll need the Drakkar ship to reach Ashlands shores, and fully upgraded Mistlands/Ashlands gear to survive the landing.
Summoning Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Charred Fortress Warlord Drops | Summoning items drop from warlord enemies inside Charred Fortresses — the Ashlands' dungeon equivalent. These are multi-level fortress raids with Charred enemies, Morgen, and the Warlord boss. |
| Fader Altar | Located at a marked altar deep in the Ashlands. Discoverable via runestones in Charred Fortresses. |
2. Stats & Weaknesses
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | ~15,000+ HP |
| Damage Type | Fire (AoE attacks, lava), Slash (melee weapon), Blunt (ground slam) |
| Weak To | No specific elemental weakness — use highest raw DPS (Flametal weapons) |
| Resistant To | Fire (heavily resistant — don't use fire weapons) |
| Immune To | Spirit, Poison, Stagger |
3. Attack Patterns
| Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Flame Wave | Sweeps a massive wave of fire across the arena. Wide range, heavy fire damage. | Barley Wine reduces damage. Use the arena terrain (lava-safe rock platforms) to create distance. The wave has a visible wind-up — sprint to the edges. |
| Lava Eruption | Smashes the ground, causing lava geysers to erupt in targeted areas. Lingering fire pools. | Watch for glowing spots on the ground and move immediately. Fight on solid rock platforms, avoid standing near lava. |
| Melee Combo | 2-hit weapon combo with his Flametal greatsword. Each hit deals massive slash + fire damage. | Parry with Flametal Shield or roll. The combo is well-telegraphed — you can parry the first hit and dodge the second. |
| Ground Slam | Jumps and slams the ground, creating a shockwave. Knocks back and deals blunt damage. | Roll backward. The shockwave travels outward in a ring — you can also jump over it. |
| Minion Summon | Calls Charred Warriors or Morgen adds into the arena for assistance. | Use AoE attacks (Flametal Atgeir, Staff of Embers) to clear adds quickly. Don't let them pile up. |
4. Best Weapons & Strategy
Recommended Weapons
| Weapon | Why |
|---|---|
| Flametal Sword ⭐ | Highest DPS Ashlands weapon. The intended gear tier for this fight. Fast attack speed for hit-and-run. |
| Flametal Mace | Blunt damage option. Good if you prefer mace movesets and need stagger potential. |
| Flametal Atgeir | Excellent AoE for clearing minions. The heavy attack spin clears Charred adds in one combo. |
| Staff of Ice Shards | Frost damage bypasses his fire resistance. The slow effect helps control his movement. Mage build viable with Embla armor and Eitr foods. |
| Dundr (Staff of Fracturing) | High burst magic damage. Alternate magic option if you have the Eitr pool to sustain it. |
Strategy
- Barley Wine + Flametal Armor: Fire resistance is mandatory. Flametal Armor's built-in heat resistance stacks with Barley Wine for maximum fire mitigation. You need both.
- Control the arena: Avoid standing on lava or near lava pools. The arena has safe rock platforms — memorize their locations and fight on them exclusively.
- Parry for damage windows: Fader's melee combo is parryable. A successful parry gives you 3-4 free hits. Don't get greedy — he recovers fast.
- Clear adds fast: Charred Warriors and Morgen that Fader summons are dangerous distractions. Kill them immediately with AoE before refocusing on Fader.
- Use Bonemass power: Physical resistance from Bonemass's power reduces his melee damage significantly. Yagluth's power is redundant (your gear + Barley Wine already covers fire resistance).
- Mage build is viable: Embla Armor + 3 Eitr foods + Staff of Ice Shards is a strong alternative to melee. The frost slow makes Fader's attacks much easier to dodge. Keep Staff of Protection bubble up at all times.
5. Pre-Fight Preparation Checklist
- ✅ Flametal Sword / Mace / Atgeir (Level 3+) — or Staff of Ice Shards for mage
- ✅ Flametal Armor set (Level 2+) — heavy armor with built-in heat resistance
- ✅ Flametal Shield — for parrying his melee combo
- ✅ 3 Barley Wine — fire resistance stacks with Flametal Armor
- ✅ 3-5 Major Healing Mead
- ✅ 3 best foods: Meat Platter + Misthare Supreme + Honey Glazed Chicken (melee) or 3 Eitr foods (mage)
- ✅ Bonemass Forsaken Power equipped
- ✅ Clear Charred patrols around the altar
- ✅ Scout and memorize the safe rock platforms in the arena
6. Forsaken Power & Rewards
