Valheim Taming & Breeding Guide 2026
Master the art of taming every creature in Valheim. From your first boar to noble 2-star wolves and rideable lox, this guide covers food requirements, pen designs, breeding mechanics, star rating inheritance, and how to build a self-sustaining animal farm.
1. Taming Mechanics Overview
All tameable creatures follow the same core taming process:
- Build a pen or pit to contain the creature
- Drop food inside the pen (species-specific)
- Wait for the creature to eat while calm (no red exclamation mark)
- Yellow hearts indicate taming progress (hover to see percentage)
- 30 minutes of successful taming ticks — typically needs only 3 pieces of food total
- You must stay within ~64 meters for the area to remain active
2. How to Tame Boars (Meadows)
Boars are your first tame. They provide a renewable supply of Raw Meat and Leather Scraps.
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Biome | Meadows |
| Food | Mushrooms, Raspberries, Blueberries, Carrots, Turnips, Onions |
| Pen | Roundpole fence (minimum) |
| Population Limit | 5 boars within 10 meters (for breeding) |
| Offspring Growth | 50 minutes to adult |
Method: Build a small roundpole pen with one open side. Drop mushrooms/berries inside. Lure a boar in by walking near it, then quickly close the gap. Crouch and wait. Keep fire sources FAR away — boars panic near fire and won't eat.
3. How to Tame Wolves (Mountain)
Wolves are aggressive combat companions. Tamed wolves fight enemies for you and can be bred into a powerful wolf army.
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Biome | Mountains (night spawns for starred wolves) |
| Food | Raw Meat (Boar, Deer, Neck Tail), Raw Fish, Sausages. Wolves will NOT eat wolf meat. |
| Pen | Stakewall or stone walls (Roundpole won't hold them). Or dig a pit. |
| Population Limit | 4 wolves within 10 meters |
| Offspring Growth | 50 minutes |
4. How to Tame Lox (Plains)
Lox are massive, rideable beasts. They hit extremely hard but are worth taming for transport and combat.
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Biome | Plains |
| Food | Cloudberries, Barley, Flax |
| Pen | Stone walls or dug pit (anything weaker gets destroyed) |
| Population Limit | 4 lox within 20 meters |
| Offspring Growth | 100 minutes |
| Rideable | Yes — craft a Lox Saddle to ride |
Method: Build a stone pen or deep pit. Toss cloudberries inside. Aggro the lox and lead it in, then seal it off and back away. Lox won't eat if a roof is too close. Sneak-feeding (crouch, drop food, back away) works if you can't build a pen.
5. How to Tame Asksvin (Ashlands)
Asksvin are the Ashlands' mount creatures. Fast, aggressive, and adapted to volcanic terrain.
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Biome | Ashlands |
| Food | Ashlands-native plants and meats |
| Pen | Stone or Flametal-reinforced enclosure |
| Rideable | Yes — craft an Asksvin Saddle |
6. Chickens & Hens (Plains+)
Buy Eggs from Haldor (1,500 coins). Place eggs near a fire source to hatch into Chickens → grow into Hens. Hens lay more eggs. Feed: Dandelions, Barley, seeds.
7. Breeding Mechanics & Star Inheritance
| Species | Food | Pop. Limit | Grow Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boar | Mushrooms, berries, carrots | 5 within 10m | 50 min |
| Wolf | Raw meat, fish | 4 within 10m | 50 min |
| Lox | Cloudberries, barley, flax | 4 within 20m | 100 min |
Star Inheritance: Offspring inherit the star rating of the birthing parent. A 2-star mother + 0-star father = 2-star offspring. This makes starred animals extremely valuable for breeding programs. Pink hearts indicate successful mating. Don't overcrowd — exceeding the population limit stops all breeding.
8. Pen & Enclosure Designs
| Creature | Recommended Pen | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Boar | Roundpole fence (3x3 tiles) | Keep away from fire. Simple and cheap. |
| Wolf | Stakewall + Roof overhang (to prevent jumping out) | Or dig a 2-deep pit — wolves can't jump out. |
| Lox | Stone walls (4x4 tiles minimum) or deep pit | Lox break wooden structures. No roof — they won't eat. |
| Asksvin | Stone/Flametal enclosure (4x4+ tiles) | Ashlands-tier durability needed. |
| Chicken | Enclosed barn with fire source + feeder | Protect from raids and predators. |
